UPDATE: Steam uses the "dummy" screenshots to generate thumbnail pictures. Inside of the folder where the screenshots are kept you will find a folder called "thumbnails". Before you upload your overwritten pictures to Steam, delete all of the pictures from the thumbnail folder. When you upload the new screenshots to Steam it will automatically generate a new set of thumbnail pictures from the custom ones. This way your preview picture links and your screenshots will match!

uh how do you open screenshot uploader what you said does not work anymore i think
the ui has changed so you no longer access the shot uploader from your library, but otherwise this still works fine.

i found another trick. all you have to do is rename the "custom screenshot" to the " dummy image" name. example (20200422190330_1) is the name of my file

How do you open the Screenshot Uploader? When I close my game it doesn't automatically open up…
How do you do this on a Mac? Preview tells me it can't edit the dummy screenshot and instead creates a duplicate with the custom screenshot I copied over. The actual screenshot is of a game run that took nearly two hours to accomplish, and I'm not doing that all again so soon to retake it properly!
